This behaviour is because SharePoint Designer is an HTML editor - Notepad works the same way.

I would guess that it's set up this way so that you can test your code or any changes (File - Preview in Browser) to see if it works before saving it, as you wouldn't want to save any code that doesn't work.

As far as I know, there is no Autosave feature.
